Food and drink

Though the Canary Islands are a part of Spain, Lanzarote does also have its own, identifiable cuisine. Have a taste of the traditional local food during your villa holiday in Lanzarote. Papas Arrugudas are skin-on potatoes boiled in seawater, often served with Mojo Sauce (fiery or garlicky, depending on the colour).

With many herds of goats still roaming around the island, it would be rude not to try the delicious cheese they produce. If you see them on the menu, be sure to also order the La Santa prawns – these are caught off the coast of La Santa, on Lanzarote.

Best beaches

Lanzarote is unique in that it is home to both white and black sand beaches, thanks to its dramatic volcanic origins.

Head to the south of the island and Playa de Papagayo, for golden sands that are popular among holidaymakers. The clear water is ideal for snorkelling too.

Playa Flamingo is another bustling tourist hotspot, with a coastline that is well-lined with bars, restaurants, and shops. If visiting somewhere more unusual is on your list, however, Playa del Charco de los Chicos is a must, with its black sand, red cliffs, and strange green lagoon.

Due to its island nature, beaches certainly won’t be in short supply during your villa holiday in Lanzarote. Get off the beaten track and explore the terrain with a gentle hike, where you’ll often be rewarded with secluded, unspoiled sand. Don’t be fooled by the size of this small island – there’s much more to Lanzarote than lazing on the beach, not that we don’t recommend this too!

Explore the dramatic origins of Lanzarote (which was actually formed after a volcanic eruption), and head to the island’s main attraction, Timanfaya National Park. Home to geological formations, the landscape of this area has an out-of-this-world feeling.

Grab your hiking shoes and climb the heights of Lanzarote – Montana Roja and Montana Corona are two locations that (once you reach the top) will reward you with jaw-dropping views.

In the southwest of Lanzarote sits Los Charcones, a series of small natural pools. There’s a tricky walk along the rocks that you have to undertake to reach them – watch out for the tide levels too, they can make swimming here dangerous. However, if you do get lucky (and are feeling brave) you will certainly be rewarded – you’ll likely have one of these pools all to yourself.

Teguise

Holding great importance in the history of the island, the town of Teguise was one of the first founded in the Canary Islands and was Lanzarote’s capital until 1847. Nowadays, this nod to the past can still be seen in the several museums and churches across the town.

Arrecife

The largest city on the island, and home to the port and airport. You’ll likely spend at least some time here during your villa holiday in Lanzarote – the city has a charming old quarter, as well gorgeous golden beaches and tons of restaurants too.

Tias

Once a town that visitors tended to just drive through, the love for Tias has thankfully grown. The area now has the advantage of being a well-serviced town, without the authenticity and culture of the place.

Puerto del Carmen

A great spot for partygoers and families alike, the buzzing town of Puerto del Carmen has sweeping beaches, nightclubs, and (further inland) the famed Ranco Texas Lanzarote Park. Entertainment is at the heart of this resort town.

Playa Blanca

In the south of the island sits one of the newest resort towns, Playa Blanca. Once a sleepy fishing village, the area has grown considerably over the areas, now accommodating tourists from all over the world. Head here for the spectacular beach and waterpark!

Arrieta

This small coastal village is tiny in size – housing just several hundred residents – but in the summer months, tourists and locals alike flock to its island-famous beach. The rising popularity of the coast means that, despite its size, there’s still a good number of restaurants and bars to take your pick from.

Top tips

Lanzarote doesn’t have a train station, so public transport is limited to buses and taxis.
The buses are cheap and – in the resort towns and major hubs – relatively frequent.
However, if staying in more rural areas, please be aware that the buses may be less often/not stop there at all, especially during the weekends.

Lanzarote travel: Getting there and around

Lanzarote is part of the popular Canary Island group, making flights there frequent from most UK airports, especially during the summer time. Once there, you’ll find renting a car easy. Our villas also have onsite parking too. The beaches and mountains are best explored by foot, or maybe you want to hop on a boat and take in the rugged coastline from the sea?

By flight

You’ll most likely arrive in Lanzarote via plane. Being a tourist hotspot, there’s many flight options for you if travelling from the UK, and the journey takes around four hours. In the summer months, many families choose to spend their holidays on the island, so flights may be more frequent but also pricier.

By bike

There are places to rent bikes in the main tourist hubs of Lanzarote, and in the cooler months, we’d definitely recommend this cheap and eco-friendly mode of transport, especially for seeing the immediate area around your villa.

By taxi

Taxis are a more expensive way to get around Lanzarote, but they’re an easy way to get from A to B if you require it. You’ll usually be able to find them easily at the main tourist hubs.

By boat

Lanzarote is an island, so of course, it makes sense to head to the open seas and see the rugged coastline from a different perspective. Our concierge team can help you organise a boat trip for you and your party, during your holiday.
