Milan travel: Getting there and around

Milan is served by two airports: Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Linate Airport (LIN). These are well-connected to major cities in the UK, including London, Manchester, and Edinburgh, with direct flights operated by various airlines. The flight duration from the UK to Milan is approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the departure city.

By car

While Milan is well-connected by road, driving in the city centre can be challenging due to heavy traffic and limited parking spaces. The city’s ZTL (Limited Traffic Zones) are enforced in certain areas.

 

By public transport

Milan boasts an efficient and extensive public transportation system, including metro lines, buses, and trams. The metro is the fastest way to travel longer distances, with four lines (M1-M4) covering the city and its outskirts.

Note: Milan’s public transportation system is integrated, meaning you can use the same ticket for the metro, buses, and trams within a set time period. It’s important to validate your ticket before boarding and keep it with you until the end of your journey, as occasional ticket inspections take place.

By taxi

Taxis are widely available in Milan, and they can be hailed on the street or found at designated taxi ranks. Official taxis are usually white with a “TAXI” sign on the roof. Make sure the taxi has a working meter and ask for an estimate before starting the journey. It’s common to round up the fare or add a small tip. Taxis can be convenient for shorter distances or when travelling with heavy luggage.

By bike

Milan has an expanding network of bike lanes, making cycling a popular and eco-friendly way to get around the city. Several bike-sharing services are available, where you can rent a bike for a short period and return it to a different station. Look for bike stations scattered throughout the city or use mobile apps such as bikeMi to locate available bikes.

By foot

Milan’s city centre is relatively compact and pedestrian-friendly. Many of the main attractions, shopping areas, and restaurants are within walking distance of each other. Exploring on foot allows you to soak in the vibrant atmosphere and discover hidden gems along the way.
