We believe that one of the most important things of any holiday is the food, but you’ll be pleased to know that St Lucia certainly doesn’t disappoint. On the menu, you’ll find zingy rum cocktails and sumptuous curries, all enjoyed under the heat of the Caribbean sun. If you’re a meat eater, you’ll want to try the curried lamb and mouthwatering fish rotis! For vegetarians, try callaloo soup: it’s made with callaloo (a green leafy vegetable grown on the island), okra, potatoes and garlic. Just be sure to choose one that’s made without added seafood or meat.

The national dish of the island is green figs and salt cod – salted cod and green bananas cooked to perfection with plenty of vegetables and spices. It’s best enjoyed washed down with a chilled Piton beer – a combination you won’t want to miss!

If lounging on the beach all day isn’t for you, don’t fret! From water-sports and hiking to plantation tours and helicopter trips, there’s plenty to tickle your fancy in St Lucia.

Pack for all weathers: Although the Caribbean sunshine may be the only thing on your mind, don’t forget St Lucia has a tropical climate. That means rain can come at any time, so you won’t want to be caught without a trusty raincoat!
Consider off-season: The dry period may be top of your list, but travelling in off-season could be a game changer. From June to October, you’ll enjoy a more authentic experience without so many tourists.
Bug spray: It’s a good idea to pack some bug spray to avoid any unwanted holiday guests!

Tranquil bays take you away from the crowds, while any adventurers in the group can indulge in water-sports on the busier stretches.

Oliver's Hidden Gem

For a rugged feel, head to the stunning Donkey Beach. It’s not a sunbather’s choice as the waves are pretty choppy, but it’s perfect for walking routes and photo opportunities.

Grand Anse Beach

If turtle-spotting is on the agenda (and let’s face it, it’s got to be!), head to Grand Anse Beach which is tucked away on the north-east side of the island. Nesting season spans from March to August, so if you’re lucky you’ll catch a glimpse of these endangered creatures approaching the shore to lay their eggs. It’s truly a once in a lifetime experience.

Anse Chastanet Beach

Snorkelling is a huge part of St Lucia holidays and there’s no place to do it like Anse Chastanet Beach. Here you’ll have the opportunity to spot some incredible marine life, including puffer fish, parrot fish, eels and turtles. Reduit Beach

If you’re travelling with little ones, this is a great option for calm waters and beachfront restaurants. The mile-long stretch is one of the most popular on the island so get there early to bag the best patch. It’s also home to St Lucia’s open waterpark, Splash Island!

Top Tips

Be sure to avoid packing camouflage clothing. It’s illegal for anyone (including children) to wear camouflage in St Lucia!
Those with sensitive stomachs should prepare for various twists and turns when travelling the roads.
Minibuses have a green number plate with an M prefix, making them easy to spot.

St Lucia travel: Getting there and around

Flights

The key airlines that fly direct from the UK to Hewanorra International Airport are British Airways, TUI and Virgin Atlantic. The flight time is around 8.5 hours.

By taxi and water taxi

Taxis are widely available but it’s best to check the price before you travel. The roads are notoriously hairy on the island so you may want to consider a water taxi for a smoother ride!

By car

Rental cars can be booked at the airport and can make your holiday a bit easier to navigate. Good news – they drive on the left!

By bus

If you don’t fancy driving on the rocky roads, a minibus is a great alternative. They come regularly and are the locals’ main means of transport.
